I’d thought that it would be difficult to carry the Carlisle & Holbrooke Series past the Seven Years War; how wrong could I be? The country might have been at peace with its neighbours in 1764, but there was still plenty of naval activity.
Straits of Anián is the eighteenth book in the series, and it takes George Holbrooke further than he’s been before, into the vastness of the Pacific Ocean in search of a route to the riches of the East, a route that’s not guarded by Britain’s rivals. He knows it will be a long voyage, and he’s prepared for trouble with Spain and France, but the greatest challenge lies within his own ship, for not everyone on board is who they appear to be.
This is a story about the early days of global discovery, before James Cook sailed into history, and it gives some insights into the Admiralty’s thinking on its relations with indigenous peoples and the ownership of faraway lands in the new Age of Enlightenment.
Straits of Anián is available now in Kindle and Paperback formats, but it might take a few days to show on your regional Amazon store.
Audio Editions: David Lane Pusey is narrating the whole Carlisle & Holbrooke series, book-by-book, and producing them in audio format. He’s presently working on #17 Red Gold which will be available soon.
